The Bunion that got your foot

We tend to do a lot of walking, good heavens sometimes it feels like from the moment we are born, we are preparing our feet for the massive job of walking.

Our parents and everyone expects us to get up and go from the get go. As we grow older and the flow of life seems to take its toll on us, we begin to notice strange things about our body and about our feet, which are the most over used part of our body and the most unappreciated.

As things progress, we begin to feel different aches and pains on our feet. This includes some strange growth that just defy explanations, it sometimes leaves us asking "Hello where did that come from." One common and misunderstood growth/Defect that afflicts us is Hallux Valgus.

What’s a Bunion

The Hallux Valgus or its most popular name "Bunion" is a deformity characterized by medial deviation of the first metatarsal and lateral deviation of the hallux (big toe), often erroneously described as an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the head of the big toe the bunion is one of the defects that when it is allowed to occur can become a major problem at some later date.

The defect caused by the long-term use of shoes, particularly tight-fitting shoes with pointed toes.

Let’s me give you an example.

Remember those great pair of shoes, you saw on your way home. The one you just had to have because of the colour, or the way it just fitted you, albeit a bit tight at the front. Now five months later, you can't wear the shoes. Sadly with a tear in your eye, you gave them out as a gift, but not without them
leaving you a parting gift of their own. Pain around your toe and the sole of your feet and a slight bump at the side of your toe.

That dear is the beginning of a Hallux Valgus.

The bump caused partly due to the swollen bursal sac or an osseous (bony) anomaly on the metatarsophalangeal joint. The larger part of the bump is a normal part of the head of the first metatarsal bone that has tilted sideways to stick out at its top.

Studies have shown that when compared from a non-shoe wearing culture to a shoe wearing culture. The non-shoe wearing culture don’t suffer from bunion.

What to lookout for

The symptoms of bunions include irritated skin around the bunion, pain when walking, joint redness and pain, and possible shift of the big toe toward the other toes. Blisters may form more easily around the site of the bunion as well.

One problem with having a bunions is it can make it more difficult to find shoes that fit properly; in the most severe of cases, it will as if your foot hurts in different places even without the constriction of shoes because it then becomes a mechanical function problem of the forefoot.

4 types of skin protection options for prosthetic users

Artificial and prosthetic limbs are a fact of life for amputees. Whether you lost a leg or an arm due to an accident, diabetes or an infection. It's what you need, if you wants to get back to living a fruitful life. That joy of getting an artificial limb or prosthesis can sometimes be short lived, when it becomes unconformable to use the prosthesis. The socket is the cup shaped plug that connects the body to the prosthesis. Each time you wear your prosthesis, it constantly bruises or chaffs you. Making the idea of putting it on a dreadful experience. The chaffing and bruising, is caused by tiny nicks in the interior face of the socket. Prosthetics In Nigeria: The Amputee Story pt 3

It can be an upper or lower body extremity. Example includes below the knee prosthetics and above the knee Prosthesis for the lower body extremity and below the elbow and above the elbow Prosthesis for the Upper body extremity to mention a few.” These device can render a cosmetic effect replacement to a functional effect replacement to devices that can perform better that the actual limb. Studies show that the technology of the locally made prosthetics provide more of a cosmetic effect, this is due to the technologies available to our locally prosthetic technicians.
